Machine-room-less elevator
What is a machine room-less elevator?
A machine room-less elevator—commonly known as an MRL—is an electric elevator where the traction motor and control panel are integrated directly into the hoistway, eliminating the need for a dedicated technical room on the roof or nearby. Developed in the 1990s, this technology is now the standard solution for both new buildings and renovation projects.
OCTÉ Lift and SECA offer a comprehensive range of MRL elevators suitable for all building heights and applications (residential, office, commercial, and healthcare).
Advantages of MRL technology
- Space savings: elimination of the machine room (reclaiming approximately 4 to 8 m²)
- Construction cost savings: no additional technical slab required on the roof
- Energy efficiency: permanent magnet motors, IE3 class
- Low noise levels: quiet, gearless drive system
- Easier maintenance: access to components via the hoistway or control cabinet
- EN 81-20 compliance: the benchmark standard for modern electric elevators
Technical specifications
Drive System
The gearless permanent-magnet motor, integrated into the upper part of the shaft, offers a rated speed of 1 to 2.5 m/s, depending on the travel height. Energy consumption is reduced by 30% to 50% compared to a geared electric elevator of the same capacity.
Control Panel
The OCTÉ VERSO control cabinet is installed either inside or outside the shaft, depending on the configuration. It integrates the variable frequency drive, call management, VERSO Connect, and diagnostic interfaces.
Applications
The MRL elevator is suitable for all buildings ranging from 2 to 30 levels, including residential, commercial, hospitality, healthcare, and retail facilities. It is currently the most widely installed solution for new projects in France.
